01. What is World Environment Day?
02. In Spain we have the Island of El Hierro, an example of a sustainable island.
World Environment Day (WED) is one of the United Nations key tools for raising awareness about environment and encouraging people all over the world to take action. Since it was established in the United Nations General Assembly, in its Resolution of 15 December 1972 with which the Stockholm Conference was opened, it has been celebrated on 5th June every year since 1973.
Over the years, this celebration has grown to become a global platform in which people from more than 100 countries take part. Furthermore it is YOUR DAY, a day in which you can take action for the environment in such a way so that the total sum of every individual action taken will mark a major positive impact on the planet.
This year, World Environment Day will focus on the Small Island Developing States in support of the United Nations designation of 2014 as the International Year of SIDS, relating this topic to climate change. In particular, the slogan chosen to reflect this topic is "Raise your voice, not the sea level".
The aim is to focus public attention on those areas because of the SIDS International Conference which will be held in September and explain the importance of these; as well as the urgent need to protect the islands from the growing risks and challenges they face as a result of climate change. World Environment Day is a great way to ask everyone to be in solidarity with small islands.
